The Space Launched Assault Missile - 4 was a rear-aspect infrared combat missile designed by the Fox Corporation for use in space during starship to starship engagements. The missile was the first to utilise ITAS, with the first being the Missile Automatic Kill Switch (MAKS), a safety feature designed to self destruct the missile if it loses track of its target for too long, implemented after pilots experienced spontaneous target-switching issues with the SLAM-3. This prevents it from eventually becoming a potential explosive hazard in the future or in crowded areas. The SLAM-4 also increased the seeker's flare resistance, making it slightly less susceptible to countermeasures deployed by the target.
With the introduction of the SLAM-4 to Kolban Alliance starfighters in 1745, the ratio of confirmed kills to losses for the starfighter fleet dramatically increased. With this, space-capable guided missiles quickly became much more commonplace in combat situations in the galaxy.
